The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a strong warning to Nigerians, cautioning that any form of visa fraud could permanently shut the door to travelling to the United States.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Embassy stressed that falsifying information, lying during interviews, or submitting forged documents during visa applications attracts severe penalties under U.S. immigration law.
According to the Embassy, offenders risk a lifetime ban with no chance of reversal.
“Visa fraud has serious consequences. Lying or providing fake documents can lead to permanent visa bans under U.S. immigration law. This means you will never go,” the statement read.
The warning is part of renewed efforts by U.S. authorities to discourage misrepresentation and document falsification, which officials say remains a major issue in visa applications from several countries, including Nigeria.
The advisory also came amid ongoing diplomatic engagements between both nations. Recently, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, held talks with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, where both sides discussed strengthening bilateral relations and areas of cooperation.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the discussions touched on regional security concerns and broader international partnerships, especially as Nigeria continues to draw global attention over its internal security challenges.
In recent months, members of the U.S. Congress have raised concerns over violent attacks in parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, describing them as threats to religious freedom and civilian safety.
American lawmakers have since called for stronger collaboration between the U.S. and Nigerian governments to protect vulnerable communities and address insecurity.
While reaffirming its commitment to working closely with Nigeria, the U.S. Embassy urged Nigerians seeking visas to follow due process and remain truthful throughout their applications.
The Embassy warned that attempts to cut corners or manipulate the system could have lifelong consequences, stressing that honesty remains the safest path for anyone seeking legal entry into the United States.
